About The Groundhog Day Marathon

The Groundhog Day Marathon, held on February 2, 2024, in Walker, MI, is a unique and exciting race that embraces the winter season. Inspired by Grand Rapids Gus, the more interesting cousin of Punxsutawney Phil, this event encourages participants to embrace the cold and snow rather than lamenting over six more weeks of winter.

The race offers different events to cater to various preferences and fitness levels. The Marathon, similar to the movie, takes runners through a beautiful and snowy course. Participants will feel like they’re reliving the same day over and over as they complete six loops of approximately 4.4 miles on a certified course. With two aid stations and a finish line area, runners can expect a well-supported race experience.

For those who prefer a shorter distance, there is also a Half Marathon option, where runners only need to complete three loops of the course. Additionally, the Moonlight 1/6 Marathon on Groundhog Eve is a unique opportunity for participants to compete in a world championship event.

Located outside of Grand Rapids, Michigan, the race promises lots of snow on the course, creating a truly winter running experience. While the weather may be challenging, it adds to the excitement and adventure of the race.

For runners seeking training support, the local running club, RunGR, offers training programs specifically designed for Groundhog distances. With multiple coaches and a large group of runners, joining RunGR provides an excellent opportunity to train alongside like-minded individuals.

So, lace up your running shoes, embrace the cold, and celebrate Groundhog Day by participating in the Groundhog Day Marathon. It’s more than just a race, it’s an unforgettable winter running experience that will leave you with lasting memories and an immense sense of accomplishment.
