The Experience

The Arizona Trail Vail Scramble, now in its 8th year, is a low-key desert trail race that draws roughly 100 runners each spring from about 13 states, with a loyal 13% returning year after year. Set in the valley between the Santa Rita and Rincon Mountains, the point-to-point half-marathon winds gently downhill through classic Sonoran Desert scenery—ocotillo, prickly pear, creosote, and mesquite—offering sweeping views and a forgiving profile that's ideal for first-time trail runners or those chasing a fast time.

The half-marathon and 10K courses follow the Arizona Trail north, mostly on a gentle, winding descent, while the marathon tackles more challenging ups and downs along the foothills. The small field means no crowds, just the quiet crunch of dirt underfoot and wide-open horizons. Finish with a sense of accomplishment and a genuine connection to one of Arizona's signature long-distance trails. It's a hidden gem for trail lovers seeking solitude and scenery without the fanfare.
