The Experience
The Muir Woods Mt. Challenge begins with a bang at Stinson Beach, immediately ascending 2,000 feet in just over two miles up the legendary Willow Camp hill. From the start, runners are treated to sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean and Stinson Beach as they traverse the ridge-line on the Coastal Trail's tight single-track. This small, intimate event draws around 85 runners from roughly four states, now in its third edition.
After the initial climb, the course dives into the damp, twisting Matt Davis Trail, where 10K participants make their triumphant return to the beach. Half and 30K runners continue deeper into Marin's wilds, climbing through Steep Ravine and into the towering redwoods of Muir Woods. The journey culminates at Cardiac Hill before a thrilling descent on the famous Dipsea Trail, with harrowing steps and incredible ocean views leading back to the start.
Despite its punishing profile—with relentless climbs and technical descents—the race welcomes both seasoned mountain runners and adventurous novices. The post-race atmosphere is relaxed and community-driven, embodying the best of Marin's outdoor spirit. For those seeking a true test of mountain running with unparalleled coastal and forest scenery, this is a hidden gem.
