Alley Loop

On a late-January weekend, Crested Butte hands its snowy streets and alleyways over to a nordic ski race and a town-wide costume party. The Alley Loop sends a costumed field winding through the heart of downtown — past storefronts, down alleys, over narrow bridges — while revelers cheer from the sidelines. Racers jostle for position, make daring passes, and by luck or congestion may briefly get waylaid on a bridge. This is not a course built for clean, quiet lines.

Once clear of town, the race opens onto the Crested Butte Nordic trail network, where the chaos gives way to pristine tracks and exhilarating vistas. It's a premier American Birkebeiner qualifying event, so the competition is genuine even when the costumes aren't — the field spans serious skiers chasing a Birkie wave and groups out purely for the spectacle.

Race-day temperatures typically land somewhere between 5 and 32°F, so wax and layers matter. The 21.1K is the marquee distance, with 42K, 10K, 5K, 3K and 1K also on the schedule. Finishers take home the 41st-annual Sauce Hat — a fair clue to how long Crested Butte has been doing this. If you like normal, look elsewhere.
