The nation's toughest marathon, the Life Time Leadville Trail Marathon and Heavy Half presented by La Sportiva, takes runners through the historic mining district's challenging trails to the highest point of any Leadville Race Series event: Mosquito Pass at 13,185 feet. With a median field of just 181 finishers, this is an intimate yet brutally demanding race set against Colorado's high alpine scenery.
First run in 2006, the course demands grit at extreme altitude, with thin air and steep climbs. About 9% of runners return each year, drawn by the challenge and camaraderie. The finish line offers a profound sense of accomplishment, with the majestic Sawatch Range as a backdrop.
