The Experience

On race morning, the small field of about 90 runners gathers at the BMX parking lot of Tom Brown Park, a short trail walk from the Animal Shelter. This is Tails and Trails, a half-marathon that raises funds for the Tallahassee Animal Shelter Foundation. The course weaves through the park's paths — a mix of paved and unpaved surfaces — entirely avoiding the Easterwood Road. Runners are asked to leave their own pets at home, as the event highlights the shelter's adoptable animals.

The atmosphere is low-key but purposeful, with a strong local-community feel. About a third of participants are repeat runners, drawn back by the cause and the park's shaded, peaceful routes. The field, while small, draws from about three states, and the typical winning time hovers around 1:21. The finish line sits in the shelter's back parking lot, where participants celebrate knowing their entry fees directly support homeless animals.

With just eight editions under its belt, Tails and Trails is a growing gem for those seeking a low-frills, heartwarming race. The typical race day brings warm, humid Florida weather — temperatures can climb from the mid-60s to the mid-80s — but the park's tree cover offers some respite. It's a perfect fit for first-timers looking for a friendly, meaningful first half-marathon.
