The Experience
The Des Plaines River Trail Race, now in its 15th edition, draws runners from some 22 states each year, with a loyal ~16% returning to the trails. Held at Half Day Forest Preserve, the half-marathon (alongside marathon, 50K, and 50-mile distances) follows the fast, crushed-gravel Des Plaines River Trail, winding through dense woodland with the river as a constant companion. Recent fields of around 276 finishers enjoy a flat, well-marked course that encourages strong times.
The race maintains a low-key, community-driven atmosphere, with volunteers and aid stations spaced generously along the route. The finish line at the forest preserve offers a relaxed post-race gathering, where runners swap stories of the shaded trail. It’s a hidden gem for those seeking a scenic, well-supported trail half without the crowds of bigger events.
