Mines of Spain Trail Races

The Mines of Spain Trail Races in Dubuque, Iowa, invite runners to explore some of eastern Iowa's most scenic and demanding trails. Held annually on the second Saturday of August, this event features half marathon, 7-mile, and 4-mile distances, plus a free kids' trail race.

The half marathon course winds through tall grass prairies and dense hardwood forests, challenging runners with a diverse mix of terrain. Expect single and double track dirt trails, wide prairie paths, rocky sections, and steep climbs, all interspersed with smooth, runnable stretches and rolling hills. The routes ascend bluffs, offering inspiring views of the Mississippi River.

Emphasizing environmental sustainability, the races are cup-free with a zero-waste approach. Profits benefit the Friends of the Mines of Spain to aid in trail maintenance. The event typically draws around 100 finishers from approximately 11 states, with a focus on sharing beautiful trails in a natural setting.
