2027 Spring Prairie Fire & Back-to-Back Challenge

The first Sunday in May puts runners on the streets of downtown Wichita for the spring edition of the Prairie Fire series — a race with twelve editions on record and a field of roughly 724 finishers, drawn recently from about 23 states. Race mornings here tend to land somewhere between 52 and 71 degrees, with a steady prairie breeze that makes its presence known.

The half is a road course that earns its reputation the honest way: flat, USATF-certified, with no net elevation drop to game the clock. Winning times sit around 70 minutes, but the course's real appeal is further back in the pack — this is a Boston-qualifying layout, and a personal best is a reasonable thing to plan for rather than merely hope for.

The day starts and finishes at Century II Plaza, with a 5K and a no-pressure Mayor's Friendly 5K sharing the morning. Every entry includes a shirt and medal, plus free race photos. Take on the Back-to-Back Challenge — spring and fall — and a branded puffy vest is waiting at the fall race. About a third of the field comes back to do it all again.
