The Experience
The Mt. Baldhead Challenge, in its inaugural year, invites runners to a multi-terrain half-marathon through Saugatuck, Michigan's coastal dunes and woodlands. With a field of roughly 195 runners from a dozen states, this intimate event offers a distinctive challenge that blends pavement, trails, and a punishing climb of over 300 steps to the summit of Mt. Baldhead. The winning time of 1:21:13 hints at a competitive front, but the course is designed for those seeking an adventurous test rather than a PR.
Starting at Oval Beach and finishing at Coghlin Park, the course takes runners through scenic woodland trails, across sand dunes, and up the iconic steps. Each stretch demands different footing—from soft sand to pavement—keeping the race mentally engaging. Hydration stations spaced less than 1.5 miles apart ensure runners stay fueled, while the staggered waves prevent congestion on the narrow trails.
The finish at Coghlin Park brings a sense of accomplishment, with a commemorative jersey as a reward. With its unique profile and small-town charm, the Mt. Baldhead Challenge is a promising new addition to the Midwest race calendar, ideal for those who like their half-marathons with a side of adventure.
