Maple Run

The Maple Run Half Marathon, the only half marathon in St. Lawrence County, draws about 71 runners each spring from roughly 10 states. The race starts and finishes at Bend in the River Park, a flat road course through Canton that winds along the Grass River. With a field this intimate, you'll know your fellow runners by mile three. The atmosphere is pure small-town community: the Blue House Restaurant sets up a concessions tent from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM, serving hot food to finishers. Packet pickup is bare-bones (BYO bag for swag), and the medal is simple, but the post-race door prize drawing and placement awards keep things festive.

The course itself is fast—truly flat, with no elevation gain to speak of—making it a fine choice for a first half marathon or a PR attempt if you don't mind a small crowd. The race has been held continuously for years, its roots in local youth running programs and a desire to shake off winter. Come for the easy logistics and the post-race chili; stay for the genuine, unhurried celebration of the season's turn.
