The Experience

Since 2005, the Run at the Rock has drawn trail runners to the pine-shaded singletrack and equestrian paths of Cedarock Park in Burlington, North Carolina. The half marathon, 10K, and 5K courses wind through the park’s rolling Piedmont woods, with a mix of twisty single-track and smooth horse trails that keep the footing interesting. December temperatures typically hover in the 30s and 40s, making for crisp, comfortable running.

With about 80 finishers in recent years—traveling from seven states and with a loyal 13 percent returning—this is a purposely small, community-driven race. The finish line rewards runners with a hooded sweatshirt, hot soup, live music, and a free kids’ race. Awards and giveaways round out a low-key, welcoming atmosphere that feels more like a trail-running club gathering than a large event. It’s an easy drive from the Triangle and Triad cities, and the well-marked loop course makes it a perfect introduction to trail half marathons.
