The Experience

The Orange Dirt Trail Series brings runners to the serene shores of Lake McMurtry, just northwest of Stillwater, Oklahoma. Starting at the East Side pavilion, the half marathon winds along the yellow and red trails, offering a mix of dirt paths and lake views. With a modest field of around 150 finishers, most from Oklahoma and a handful of neighboring states, the event has a quiet, community feel—perfect for those seeking a low-key trail challenge.

The half marathon course is an out-and-back, traversing rolling terrain through the lake's wooded landscape. While the elevation gain is minimal, the uneven trail surface keeps things interesting. The late-October date typically brings mild temperatures in the 50s–70s, ideal for a comfortable run. About 13% of runners return each year, a testament to the race's welcoming atmosphere.

Post-race, participants gather for a celebration with food and drinks, and every finisher receives a cool medal. The Orange Dirt Trail Series may be young (in its third edition as of 2024), but it's already carving out a niche as a hidden gem for trail enthusiasts in the region.
