The Experience
The Run With The Horses Marathon, first run in 2004 and now in its 18th edition, takes place in Green River, Wyoming, on the third weekend of August. This race draws participants from around 19 states, with a steady field size averaging about 52 finishers. A loyal group, about 21% of participants, return year after year.
The course begins with two miles on city streets and the paved Greenbelt Trail along the Green River before venturing onto a county-graded dirt road. Runners ascend 1st Springs Canyon, reaching an elevation of approximately 7300 feet, and then traverse the rolling hills of White Mountain between 7300 and 7500 feet. This high-plains desert landscape offers no shade after leaving the city, and participants often pause to capture the vistas and any wild horses they encounter. Aid stations are positioned every two miles, providing water, Gatorade, and various snacks.
This challenging out-and-back course, with its significant elevation changes and exposed terrain, is described by past runners as demanding. The race concludes with a festival featuring a beer garden, horseshoe tournament, car and bike show, and more, with finisher medals and tech shirts included with entry.
