Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff Dave McKay Memorial Half Marathon Spotlight

If you’ve ever wanted to race at altitude, this is your chance. The Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff Dave McKay Memorial Half Marathon returns Saturday, August 8, 2026, for its 49th year. It’s Flagstaff’s oldest race and the second oldest half marathon in Arizona—a genuine community staple with a finish line that feels earned.

The Course: Loops, Hills, and Views

This is a loop course (no out-and-back boredom) that starts at Thorpe Park. Expect a hilly, mixed-terrain route that climbs onto Observatory Mesa via an urban trail. The elevation gain is real—this is Flagstaff at about 7,000 feet—so the high-altitude air adds an extra challenge. But the payoff? Sweeping views of the San Francisco Peaks and the Coconino National Forest. Hard efforts feel sweeter with scenery like that.

Because it’s a loop, you’ll pass through neighborhoods and parks, with plenty of chances to see spectators. The course is walker-friendly too: if you want to take your time, there’s a 6 AM early start. You’ll still get a chip time and finisher medal, just not age-group awards. Dogs are not allowed on the course, so plan accordingly.

The Experience: Community and Celebration

This race is a fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Flagstaff, and that spirit shows. The atmosphere is supportive, not intimidating. All half marathon finishers receive a commemorative medal (similar to last year’s popular design). Everyone gets a $34 Sweatvac Hi-Tech colorful long-sleeved shirt and free digital race photos.

A standout perk: the FREE pre-race pizza party on Friday, August 7, at Fratelli’s Party Room (2120 N Fourth Street). It’s a great way to carb load and meet other runners. This is the kind of touch that makes a local race feel special.

Who This Race Fits

First-timers: Yes, with some caveats. The altitude and hills make it tougher than a flat, sea-level half. But the supportive community, early start option, and walker-friendly policy lower the bar. If you’re doing your first half and want a challenge with a lot of support, this could be a memorable one.

PR-seekers: Maybe not the best choice unless you’re already acclimated to altitude and hills. The course is hilly, and Flagstaff’s elevation (7,000 ft) will slow most runners. Come for the experience, not a personal best.

50-state chasers: Great pick. Arizona is a popular state, and this race offers a unique high-altitude experience. It’s also the second oldest half marathon in the state, adding a classic credential to your collection.
