Towpath Trail 10K and Half Marathon Race Spotlight

If you love running along scenic waterways, the Towpath Trail 10K and Half Marathon in Grand Rapids, Ohio, might be your perfect summer race. Set for Sunday, July 19, 2026, this event sold out earlier this year — a sign of its growing popularity. But even if you missed the registration window, it’s worth knowing about for next year, or you can join as a volunteer.

The Course: Flat, Shaded, and Historic

The half marathon follows an out-and-back route along the historic Maumee River towpath. The surface is crushed gravel and dirt — packed enough for a smooth run, but soft on the legs. Lots of trees provide shade, which you’ll appreciate when temperatures climb to a typical high of 82°F.

Starting at Providence Metropark near the dam, you’ll run past old canal locks and a grain mill that date back to the 1800s. The river views are constant, and the flat terrain means no hills to slow you down. It’s a straightforward out-and-back: head out on the towpath, then return to the finish at the Providence dam shelter.

The Experience: Small-Town Charm, Big Support

Grand Rapids is a quaint village with a welcoming vibe. After the race, you can relax by the dam or explore the town’s shops and eateries. The event itself is well-organized, with Mercy Health – Toledo providing on-site medical support.

Awards go to top overall finishers, masters (40-49), and grand masters (50+) for both the 10K and half marathon. Gift certificates are given to winners, adding a nice incentive. The atmosphere is friendly and low-key — perfect for runners who prefer a community feel over a massive city race.

Who It’s a Fit For

First-timers: The flat course and crushed gravel surface are kind to beginners. The out-and-back format makes it easy to pace yourself, and the shade helps keep you cool. Half marathoners must finish within three hours, which is a comfortable cutoff for most new runners.

PR-seekers: If you’re chasing a personal best, this flat course is a strong candidate. Just note that the out-and-back can feel repetitive mentally — bring a playlist or a mantra. The hard-packed gravel is fast, but not as fast as asphalt; still, many runners set PRs here.

50-state chasers: Ohio is a popular state to knock off, and this race offers a unique trail experience through history. The sold-out status shows it’s a favorite among travelers.

Logistics and Weather

Race day weather is typically warm: low 65°F, high 82°F. Start early to beat the heat, and hydrate well. Parking is available at Providence Metropark. The race is one of four events in the Toledo Road Runner series, so you can plan a weekend around it.

Because the 2026 race is sold out, check the official race page for future dates or to sign up as a volunteer. It’s a lovely way to experience the event even if you can’t run.
