The Experience

The Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier Fun Run, now in its 56th year, is a July tradition on California's central coast. While the original 6-mile fun run races along hard-packed sand from Morro Rock to the Cayucos Pier, the half marathon—the Rock'n Around the Pier—takes a different route, likely on paved roads through the scenic coastal town. With a field of around 212 runners and a growing trend, the event retains a intimate, community-driven feel. About one in five runners return, and participants hail from roughly seven states, giving the race a loyal, far-flung following.

The early morning start brings cool, fog-tinged air, typical July weather in the mid-50s to low 60s. The course offers ocean views and the iconic Morro Rock as a backdrop. This is not a PR-friendly, flat beach run; the half marathon likely includes rolling hills along the coastline. The finish line festivities, coupled with the small-town charm of Morro Bay, make for a rewarding post-race celebration. For those seeking a low-key, scenic half with a sense of history, this is a hidden gem.
