2027 Black Squirrel Half Marathon

Set against the backdrop of the awe-inspiring Rocky Mountains, the Black Squirrel Half Marathon offers a challenging yet accessible trail running experience in Lory State Park, Colorado. Runners are treated to breathtaking views of Horsetooth Reservoir and the expansive Great Plains to the east, and the majestic mountain range to the west.

The course covers a variety of terrain, beginning with a mile of dirt roads before ascending nearly 1,500 feet over four miles to reach an apex of 7,000 feet on Lory's west ridge. This significant climb is rewarded with well-earned, expansive views. A swift descent follows, leading into the final three and a half miles of beautiful, gently rolling, hard-packed singletrack to the finish.

With a median field size of around 281 finishers and drawing participants from about 17 states, this race, first run in 2013, has carved out a dedicated following. While the repeat-runner loyalty is around 11%, the race's unique mountain scenery and demanding course make it a noteworthy event for trail enthusiasts.
