Now in its 17th edition, the Delaware Running Festival half marathon has built a loyal following: roughly 1,550 runners toed the line recently, with participants hailing from some 33 states and about 14% returning year after year. The USATF-certified course is famously flat — elevation gain is negligible — making it a prime target for Boston qualifiers; historically, 10–12% of marathoners earn their BQ here, and half marathoners benefit from the same forgiving profile.
The route showcases Wilmington’s character, winding through historic downtown, past Rodney Square, and into leafy Brandywine Park alongside the Brandywine River. The parkways and neighborhoods offer a tour of the city’s most interesting corners without confusing turns. Runners finish at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park, where a lively post-race party awaits with live music, vendors, and activities for the whole family.
With a growing field and consistent race-day weather averaging 45–65°F, the event combines a serious racing opportunity with a warm, community-driven atmosphere. Whether chasing a PR or exploring Delaware’s first city, this half marathon delivers a well-rounded experience.
Race-provided description
Experience a scenic race course that takes you throughout historic downtown Wilmington. “The course has a lot of variety, and gives visitors a tour of many of the most interesting and beautiful parts of the city,” said one past participant from Pennsylvania. The race route travels across beautiful Brandywine Park on the Brandywine River, along prestigious parkways, through historic neighborhoods of Wilmington and past downtown’s Rodney Square but without some of the confusing turns and crossovers. Choose from a full marathon, half-marathon, 10k, or 5k. Bring a friend to take advantage of our referral rewards to earn cash and gear. Non-runners can join us at start/finish line at Tubman-Garrett Riverfront Park for a great party with live music, vendors and activities for the whole family. We believe this is your best chance to run a certified 26.2 mile road marathon in Delaware! We are a USATF certified Boston Marathon Qualifier and historically 10%-12% of our marathon runners have qualified for the Boston Marathon.
