New Years Day 5k & Half Marathon

New Year's Day races ask something simple and a little stubborn: show up. In Cumming, Georgia, the New Years Day 5K & Half Marathon answers with a 9:00 a.m. start from North Forsyth Middle School, a modest field of roughly 63 half-marathon finishers, and an entry fee of just $26. It is a race built for resolve rather than spectacle, the kind of morning where the reward is the doing.

The course is the same one the organizers return to year after year, run on roads around the school. With an elevation profile that reads flat, it is a straightforward half marathon — no climbs to negotiate, no technical footing, just 13.1 miles to open the year. The field is small and the atmosphere accordingly intimate; this is not a race you run for the crowd, but for the quiet satisfaction of a January start line.

Runners come from about eight states, a draw that speaks to the race's appeal as a New Year's ritual rather than a destination event. Everyone who finishes earns a medal, and age-group awards go five years deep starting at 10 and under. A long-sleeve shirt is available for an additional $25, and a virtual option ships swag within the continental U.S. It is a race that keeps its promises simple: a start, a course, a medal, and the first miles of a new year.
