Maine Coast Marathon

The Maine Coast Marathon offers a point-to-point course along the southern Maine shoreline, with the Atlantic as a near-constant companion. Starting near the Rachel Carson National Wildlife Refuge, the route winds through the coastal communities of Wells and Kennebunk, passing marshlands, pine forests, and rocky inlets. The certified course is predominantly flat with a very slight net drop, making it a strong candidate for a personal best, though the ocean breeze can provide a refreshing challenge.

Race weekend draws roughly 2,500 finishers, with runners arriving from about 45 states each year. The event has grown steadily across its six editions, and about 11% of participants return for another go—a sign of its enduring appeal. The mid-June date typically delivers cool, overcast conditions, with average temperatures in the mid-50s, ideal for fast times. The small-town atmosphere of Wells lends a low-key, community feel, with local volunteers manning aid stations and spectators lining the final stretch through the village.

The finish line at Wells Beach is the payoff: a grassy expanse overlooking the ocean, where runners are greeted with a finisher medal and post-race refreshments. The open course—with its lack of shade—means sunscreen is wise, but the seaside views and genuine Maine hospitality make the effort worthwhile.
