The Experience

First run in 2002, the NCR GPS Half Marathon has grown into a cherished local institution, now in its 22nd edition. With a field of about 57 runners—19% of whom return year after year—this free race in Sparks, Maryland, embodies grassroots running at its best. The course unfolds along the historic NCR Trail, a flat, crushed-stone path that slices through dense woodland, offering shade and serenity.

The race begins just north of Sparks Road, heading north to Monkton Road, then turning back south to Paper Mill Road, and finally returning north to finish at the start. It’s a smooth, fast out-and-back—ideal for a PR. Typical race-day conditions are mild, with temperatures in the 55–72°F range and light wind. Parking is available at an old stone schoolhouse a short walk from the start. While the atmosphere is low-key and community-driven, prize money is awarded to top BRRC members, adding a touch of competition. For those seeking an intimate, no-frills half marathon on a gorgeous trail, this is a hidden gem.
