Frostbite Half Marathon

The Frostbite Half Marathon, now in its 21st year, is a small but spirited race through Starkville, Mississippi, that draws about 200 runners from nearly 20 states. The out-and-back course starts with a fast downhill, winding through Mississippi State University’s campus past the football stadium before opening onto rolling farm and pastureland. A surprise hill around mile 7-8 adds character, but the gentle grades and cool January weather (averaging 37–58°F) keep it manageable.

The race’s charm lies in its low-key, community atmosphere. Runners park on nearby streets or walk from hotels, and many warm up in local coffee shops before the start. Volunteers bring enthusiasm, and the finish features a meal coupon for food trucks. Age group winners receive a quintessentially Mississippi cowbell—a unique memento. While the course is not the most scenic, it offers a genuine slice of small-town and college-town life, with solid production and generous swag making it a standout value for a race of its size.
