The Experience

On a spring Saturday in Hattiesburg, the downtown bustles with near 1,000 runners gathering at the Saenger Theatre. The 14th annual Hattiesburg Half Marathon, 10k, and 5k has grown into a beloved local tradition, raising over $200,000 for Pine Belt nonprofits. More than a race, it’s a community celebration—each mile is “owned” by a nonprofit that decorates and cheers, turning the course into a moving festival.

The route winds through downtown streets, past the Hattiesburg Zoo, across the University of Southern Mississippi’s campus, and onto the Longleaf Trace before looping back. While the organizers bill it as flat, runners note a few rolling hills—but the generous aid stations, enthusiastic volunteer support, and well-marked path keep everyone on pace. The finish line brings relief and a top-notch party: food, drinks, and the kind of Southern hospitality that makes first-timers feel like locals.

“This race literally gets bigger and better every year,” says one five-time runner. Reviewers consistently praise the organization, the crowd energy, and the festive post-race scene. With a loyal repeat rate around 10% and a growing field, this race proves that a half-marathon can be both fast and friendly—a hidden gem worth the trip.
