The Experience
Tupelo styles itself the All American City, and on race morning that claim gets tested in the dark. The gun goes off at 5 a.m., well before sunrise, because early-September Mississippi is no joke — mid-60s at the start, high-80s by the time most runners finish, with humidity hovering near 70 percent. The pre-dawn start is the smartest thing about the day, and everyone on the line knows it.
The course is an out-and-back on rolling country roads: wide, open, quietly pretty in that north-Mississippi way, with farmland and tree lines instead of landmarks. The marathon and its shorter companion race share the route before splitting around the halfway point. Water stops are set along the way and spectators are few but genuine. A six-hour clock governs the day, so first-timers and walkers have room, but nobody lingers.
This is a race with real history behind it — the organizers bill this as the 45th running, and entries stay deliberately capped, with the marathon limited to 150 and the companion race to 300. Roughly a quarter of the field comes back in later years, which for a race this size is a quiet vote of confidence. Finishers collect a medallion; the long-sleeve race shirt is the giveaway.
