The Pengelly Double Dip is a beast of a trail half marathon, climbing 3,400 feet up Mount Sentinel in Missoula. Now in its 23rd year, it draws a dedicated field of about 170 runners from eight states, and a quarter of them come back year after year. It starts in the University District near the Van Buren footbridge and heads straight up.
This is a cupless race — runners carry their own hydration — and there are no refunds or day-of registration. The small field (capped at 200) keeps it intimate and low-key, but the challenge is anything but. The single-track trails offer sweeping views of the Bitterroot Valley and the Clark Fork River, rewarding the hard work with scenery that makes the climb worth every step.
Finishers earn a pair of Pengelly Crew Socks — a simple, useful memento from a race that doesn't fuss with frills.
