Danville Half Marathon, Presented by URW Community Federal Credit Union

Now in its 20th edition, the Danville Half Marathon has become a steady presence in Virginia’s racing scene, drawing a median field of nearly 1,800 finishers. About a quarter of runners return year after year, and the event has grown to over 2,000 participants in recent years. In 2025, the race debuted a new out-and-back course that starts downtown on Main Street and crosses the MLK Bridge before settling onto the paved Riverwalk Trail.

The course is almost entirely flat, hugging the Dan River for much of its length. Runners trade city streets for tree-lined riverside views, with a soft gravel-and-paved surface that’s kind on the legs. The 3.5-hour time limit allows for a relaxed pace, making it a strong option for first-time half marathoners or those chasing a PR on a fast, straightforward route. Chip timing keeps results accurate, and the small-town atmosphere keeps the vibe friendly.

At the finish, runners get a short-sleeve shirt and the satisfaction of a well-run race in a historic mill town.
