The Experience
On a crisp December morning, about 70 runners gather at Wakefield Park in Annandale, Virginia, for the Holiday Half, now in its 11th year. The race draws runners from about four states, with roughly a quarter returning year after year—a loyal core that gives this event its intimate, hometown feel.
The course winds through wooded trails around Lake Accotink, mixing paved paths with gravel and dirt sections. Runners loop counterclockwise around the lake, pass through a neighborhood near Americana Park, and tackle a short dog-leg under Old Keene Mill Road before heading back. Four water stops dot the route, the last at mile 11, and the finish returns along the lake.
With a full-zip sweatshirt as swag and a low-key vibe, this race is a hidden gem for those seeking a quiet, scenic half without the crowds. The organizers keep a close eye on winter weather, but for locals, it’s a beloved tradition to cap off the year.
