The Experience

The Run to Read Half Marathon is a winter race with a literary heart. Held on the second Saturday in January at Prickett's Fort in Fairmont, West Virginia, it benefits Literacy Volunteers of Marion County, a United Way agency that provides free one-on-one tutoring in reading, math, and English as a second language. Now in its 21st year, the race draws about 120 finishers, with runners traveling from around 11 states and roughly 22% returning year after year.

The course is a double out-and-back on two rail trails. The first section, about five miles long, is paved and passes through the historic and restored Meredith Tunnel. The second trail is crushed limestone and offers a scenic view of the Monongahela River. With an elevation gain of roughly zero feet, it's a flat, fast course—though the January weather, with temperatures typically between 23 and 37°F, adds its own challenge.

The 1 p.m. start allows for a leisurely morning, and same-day registration and packet pickup begin at 11:30 a.m. All finishers receive a custom memento, and there's lots of post-race food. Long sleeve tech shirts are guaranteed if registered by December 17th, 2025. Awards are presented as runners finish, and chip timing is provided by Miles of Smiles Timing Services. It's a low-key, community-minded event that supports a good cause.
