The Experience

Now in its 55th year, the Syttende Mai Classic is one of Wisconsin’s longest-running half marathons—and it sells out every year. The flat, all-road loop winds through Stoughton’s tree-lined streets, past historic homes and the vibrant Norwegian festival that gives the race its name. With a 5-hour time limit and a walk division, it’s welcoming for first-timers and speedsters alike.

The race starts and finishes at the Anderson Complex at Stoughton High School, where ample parking, concessions, and bleachers await. After crossing the line, runners earn the coveted Helm of Awe medal, inspired by Norse mythology. The race T-shirt doubles as a festival booster button, granting access to the Arts and Crafts Fair and food from the Norwegian Dancers. It’s a celebration of community, heritage, and the simple joy of a flat, fast course—no hills, just heart.

Our medals will once again feature the Helm of Awe, a powerful symbol from Norse mythology.

The Helm of Awe I wore before the sons of men In defense of my treasure; Amongst all, I alone was strong, I thought to myself, For I found no power a match for my own. - The Poetic Edda. Fáfnismál, stanza 16 translated
