2027 Dirty Kiln Trail Races at Canoe Creek

The half-marathon at Canoe Creek State Park unfolds on an April morning in the hills of central Pennsylvania, air that can read anywhere from the low 40s to the low 60s and mud still holding in the hollows. The short course climbs Moore's Hill and circles the lake; the half goes back around the park on a hillier, tougher line.

This is trail running in its rawest local form: wide horse paths that let you open up, winding singletrack that doesn't, stream crossings, and mud — lots of mud, by the organizers' own cheerful admission. Expect to slow down, pick lines, and finish dirtier than you started.

Allegheny Trailrunners, the all-volunteer 501c3 behind the race, has built a quiet following: roughly a hundred finishers, about a third of them returning in later years, drawn from around ten states, with more than a decade of editions behind it. Dirty Kiln has long served as an entry point into the sport, and net proceeds go to charity. Runners leave with a T-shirt and, more memorably, the mud.
